Underground Atlanta is trying to unearth a third comeback at age 35, this time by luring bars to relocate from the city's unofficial party spot in Buckhead.
Underground's owners and Atlanta City Councilman H. Lamar Willis have persuaded about eight nightspots, including Tongue & Groove and Mako's in Buckhead Village, to relocate or open new establishments in the downtown entertainment complex.
Free-flowing alcohol, Underground's lifeblood during its initial heyday in the 1970s and its rebirth in the early 1990s, sealed the deal, officials said.
A fine-print loophole in city law exempts Underground from Atlanta's new 2:30 a.m. last call and 3 a.m. closing time for bars. The downtown complex can pour until 4.
That edge, coupled with complaints in Buckhead Village about violence, noise and cruising, sold some bar owners on shifting downtown, said Michael Krohngold, co-owner of Tongue & Groove.
So Atlanta has not been able to promote Underground and achieve any profit making businesses there, so what do they do? The write the liquor laws so that Underground has an unfair competitive advantage. So while they are forcing Buckhead o shut down early because of crime, they think they can shift business to Underground and do it crime free? I guess the idiots on the City Council have forgotten why the original Underground lost all its business. They lost all their business because of the crime! The old Underground was dangerous as hell! People wouldn't go because they were scared. Guess what? People are still not going to flock to Underground as a bar mecca for the same reason. The second you pack all those bars in Underground, the same thing will happen.
So the City Council unfairly changed the liquor laws to favor Underground as a bar/entertainment destination, but will end up with the same problem they have in Buckhead, only in a historically much more dangerous location. Brilliant!
In the 1970's an hardboiled private eye writer Ralph Dennis wrote a series of books, the Hardman Series, based in Atlanta. It was Spenser and hawk before Robert Parker conceived that detective and sidekick. In "Down Among the Jocks" series detective Hardman referred to Underground as a dangerous tourist trap. It still is, and will only become even more touristy, and much more dangerous.
"I just want to say that I don't think the two biggest problems in America are that too many people want to commit their lives to one another till death do us part, and steroids and sports. I don't think those are our two biggest problems."

But I do really like her.
Rich liberals' hypocrisy is showing
Wealthy teeth-gnashers on the left cry out that the rich's share of the Bush tax cuts are not needed, and are causing grievous harm to the country. Oh, really? Then why don't they just send theirs back, along with their Social Security and Medicare benefits?
If rich liberals are such compassionate country-lovers, why do they continue to harm both the nation and the poor by stuffing tax cuts and entitlements into their already deep pockets?
JOHN EIDSON
Marietta
First off, does Johnny know the definition oh hypocrisy. Evidently not.
Second, the "rich liberals" are trying to send their money back, by repealing the taxcuts.
Third, why don't the "rich conservatives" send their Medicare and Social Security Benefits back? Why don't the people who will probably need a safety net realize that the rich are stripping everything out of our government they can possibly get their hands on. They are not doing it because they think it will help the country, or all/any of it citizens. They are doing it because they are greedy bastards! When they retire with their millions, they will be the first in line to get benefits out of the government. After living off corporate welfare all their lives, do you think they are going to quit "living off the dole" all of a sudden.
"Rich liberals" are not stuffing "tax cuts and entitlements into their already deep pockets." They are trying to keep the "rich conservatives" from bankrupting our country by doing just that!
John seems to have drank greedily at the kool-aid trough. He doesn't realize that kool-aid is all the GOP ever plans to give him if he gets old, sick, or ends up not being able to find work other than the Walmart job that will pay him below the poverty level.
So tonight, I propose a four-year, $300 million Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative to expand job training and placement services, to provide transitional housing, and to help newly released prisoners get mentoring, including from faith-based groups. America is the land of the second chance -- and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life.
If faith cannot keep pastors from fleecing their flocks of money, priests from sexually abusing children, and deacons from having affairs, how the hell is it going to keep young men and women from sucking on crack pipes and robbing 7-11's? If the self professed faithful can't keep their lives straight, how are they going teach others to run theirs? Although the idea of priests trying to give pedofiles counseling is rich with potential humor.
Senator's stance must be a joke
I too am a lifelong Democrat who will vote Republican, and like Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.), I want my children to grow up in a country staggering under a mountain of debt, with a major loss of jobs, in a perpetual state of war in search of imaginary weapons of mass destruction, despised by the rest of the world, with an unlivable environment and an erosion of constitutional rights.
Seriously, if Miller has a problem with his children and grandchildren, can't he work out a more mature way to deal with it than spoiling the future for mine?
Snellville
Not only will those kids not get an inheritance, I am really going to screw them over...
Worse, he and his wife said, was hearing the charges against him. Both described the months of Senate debate and filibuster as "painful" and "difficult."
"It's never easy to hear people say ugly things about you and the ups and downs of the process made it difficult to keep an even keel," he said. "One day it would seem that I would be confirmed shortly and the other day it would seem that I would never be confirmed."
Ahh, where's my hanky. Republicans would gut their mothers to get their political ideology passed, but are hurt by criticism. How would you feel if somebody who made threatening and illegal gestures against you was given a lighter sentence by a racist judge? Would your feelings be hurt then, also?
I hope you enjoyed your career.Say hi to the Dixie Chicks
for me.
Yes, to have millions of fans, sell millions of records, and make millions of dollars. I would really hate to have that career!
Marget Cho has shown herself to be better than all the conservative wingnuts by having her webmaster remove all the email addresses, last names and phone numbers. Looks like some conservatives got bitch slapped!
"The president's recess appointment of this anti-civil rights judge the day after laying a wreath on the grave of Martin Luther King is an insult to Dr. King, an insult to every African-American and an insult to all Americans who share Dr. King's great goals," Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) said, referring to Bush's visit to King's tomb in Atlanta on Thursday.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) called Bush's decision "a cynical, divisive appointment that will further politicize the federal judiciary."
Bush made the announcement on Friday afternoon, and then continued to lie like a dog.
Bush said he used his constitutional authority to make the appointment because Pickering has been waiting for 2 1/2 years for a Senate vote and would have been confirmed if not for a minority of Democratic senators who have "been using unprecedented obstructionist tactics."
"I call on the Senate to stop playing politics with the American judicial system and to give my nominees the up-or-down votes they deserve," Bush said.
Of course the GOP controlled Senate used "unprecedented obstructionist tactics" to make sure hundreds of Clinton's appointees never got a vote. The Democrats have used a filibuster against a handful of Bush's nominees, and suddenly it is the work of the devil. Bush and the GOP are such lying sacks of shit.
So last year on MLK's birthday Bush lies about affirmative action. This year he makes a photo op appearance on the birthday and a day later appoints a racist to the federal appeals court. Yeah, the GOP is the party of inclusion!
Three men who went streaking through a Denny's restaurant were chilled and chagrined when they spotted a thief drive off in their getaway car, their clothes inside.
Naked in the 20-degree weather, the three young men huddled behind cars in a parking lot until police arrived.
"I don't think they were hiding. I think they were just concealing themselves," police spokesman Dick Cottam said.
The three entered the restaurant before daybreak Wednesday, wearing only shoes and hats. They left their car running so they could make a quick escape.
But the streakers watched through the windows as a man who had been eating inside the restaurant drove off in their car.
Worse than the car being stolen would be the shrinkage in 20-degree weather.
Here's a dilemma for you....
With all your honor and dignity what would you do?
This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. Please don't answer it without giving it some serious thought. By giving an honest answer you will be able to test where you stand morally.
The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation, where you will have to make a decision one way or the other. Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous. Please scroll down slowly and consider each line - this is important for the test to work accurately.
You're in Florida...In Miami, to be exact... There is great chaos going on around you, caused by a hurricane and severe floods. There are huge masses of water all over you.
You are a CNN photographer and you are in the middle of this great disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless.
You're trying to shoot very impressive photos. There are houses and people floating around you, disappearing into the water. Nature is showing all her destroying power and is ripping everything away.
Suddenly you see a man in the water, he is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken away by the masses of water and mud.
You move closer. Somehow the man looks familiar.
Suddenly you know who it is - it's George W. Bush!
At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him away, forever. You have two options. You can save him or you can take the best photo of your life. So you can save the life of George W. Bush, or you can shoot a Pulitzer prize winning photo, a unique photo displaying the death of one of the world's most powerful men.
And here's the question (please give an honest answer):
Would you select color film, or rather go with the simplicity of classic black and white?
Via The Funny Farm. Yeah, I have heard variations of it. I still like it.
President Bush's visit on Thursday to observe what would have been the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 75th birthday isn't sitting well with area tribute organizers.
They say Bush invited himself to their party and will potentially force the cancellation of some events due to security concerns. What's more, they say, Bush will profit from a fund-raiser he will piggyback with his visit to Atlanta.
...
State Rep. Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta) said Bush's planners should have given the visit more thought.
"He has the right to come, but there should have been some consideration on what's going on locally," said Brooks. "That's quite insulting. This is not the appropriate way to honor Dr. King."
In a crass attempt to politicize the King Memorial, Bush invites himself to the party. Now the Secret Service is telling some party organizers that they have to cancel events, and leave the area early. Is there nothing that Bush won't do to try and get a few votes. Not to mention using this event so he can travel to Georgia on the taxpayer's dime, and then go to a campaign fundraiser. How convenient!
U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, Georgia's rebellious Democrat, said Tuesday he will campaign at President Bush's side throughout the year.
Miller's first task in trying to seal the Republican president's re-election grip on his crucial Southern base will be to introduce Bush at a $2,000-a-head fund-raiser Thursday in Atlanta.
Okay, when do we kick this turncoat piece of shit out of the Democratic Party? At least we should be yanking his superdelegate status. How many backs does he have to stab? Does anybody still think the Democratic Party has left him, when he is constantly blowing one of the most conservative Republican Presidents we have ever had?
Lee Kyser put down $40,000 and pays about $475 in monthly dues at Druid Hills Golf Club, just like most other senior members of the 91-year-old Clifton Road country club near Emory University.
Kyser, a clinical psychologist, golfs there with her significant other, and plans to enroll their 2-year-old twins in swimming lessons there next year.
"We're just like any other family," Kyser said, "except that we happen to be lesbians."
This fact sits at the center of a dispute pitting Kyser and another gay couple against the club. Kyser wants her partner, attorney and political activist Lawrie Demorest, to be afforded the same privileges as other members' spouses. Randy L. New, an attorney, wants the same for his partner, Dr. Russell Tippins, who is a radiologist.
But the club has refused, citing bylaws that permit such privileges only for members who are legally married. So in July, Kyser and New filed a sexual-orientation discrimination complaint -- marking only the second time such legal action has been taken against a country club in the United States.
Now if the couples could be legally married, and chose not to, I could understand not granting the same rights other spouses have. However, since they are as legally joined as they are allowed to be, I feel they should be afforded all the privileges of different sex couples that are allowed to be married. It is a shame the club is even fighting this. I understand they want to prevent non-married couples from having these privileges, to prevent abuse. Forcing a couple to have a marriage license prevents two people who are only casually acquainted from saying they are a couple to split membership fees. However, with a little research the club could ascertain that same sex couples are indeed a committed couple. These couples do have domestic partner certificates, and can prove they are indeed a committed couple. Perhaps this should be the standard. Why should a committed straight couple even have to get married to share these privileges?
Update- AJC: Panel finds golf club violated ordinance.
The six members of Atlanta's Human Relations Commission said Monday they believe Druid Hills Golf Club has violated a city ordinance by not extending spousal benefits to the partners of gay members.
"It's clear that Druid Hills Golf Club does not deny that they treat married couples and couples that have a domestic relationship differently, and the [city] ordinance clearly states that they should not be treated differently, and that's it," said Dr. Fernando A. Gonzalez, a commission member, following two hours of testimony.
...
If the mayor agrees with the commission's findings, Druid Hills Country Club will likely be asked to change its bylaws. If its board refuses, the mayor could take away the club's business and liquor licenses.
Wow, pretty cut and dried, and I think the correct decision. I don't see the mayor going against this decision. Looks like the club will have to begin changing some bylaws, and it could be tricky. I think they will have to extend domestic benefits to gay and straight couples to avoid legal challenges from non-married straight couples. Perhaps requiring some type of legal "Domestic Partner" certificate. Of course, if gay couples were allowed to get married like everybody else, all this tricky legal shit just goes away.
Teen surfer Bethany Hamilton returned to competition Saturday, just 10 weeks after losing her left arm in a shark attack.
Hamilton, 13, placed fifth in her age group in the Open Women Division of a National Scholastic Surfing Association meet at Banyans.
"It was definitely a good start," Hamilton said.
...
Hamilton rejected any special treatment, said Bobbi Lee, NSSA Hawaii Conference director.
"I offered to give her more time (between heats) or put her in a more favorable heat," Lee said. "She refused. She said she wanted to be treated like anybody else."
This just amazes me. Ten weeks ago a shark rips her arm off. Not only has she gotten back on the horse, she is placing in a competition. The heart, spirit and positive attitude this girl has is just amazing.
A lone book titled "Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends" was untouched.
But nearly everything else in Chris Kirk's downtown Olympia apartment was encased in aluminum foil when he returned home Monday night from a trip to Los Angeles.
The walls, ceiling, cabinets and everything in between now shimmer with a metallic glow, thanks to a prank by Kirk's longtime friend, Olympia native Luke Trerice.
...
No detail was too small or too time-consuming.
Trerice and his friends unrolled the toilet paper in the bathroom, enveloped the bath tissue in aluminum foil and rolled it back up again. They covered Kirk's book and compact disc collections but made sure each CD case could open and shut normally.
They even used foil to encircle Kirk's spare change -- each individual quarter he had left atop a living room bookshelf.
"It went surprisingly fast," Trerice said. "The toilet was hard. The molding around the doorways took a very long time."
I think the payoff was worth the work. Go see the pictures.
I couldn't live without this...,

As a college coed whose father happens to be the appointed President of the United States, life can be just one big pressure cooker. That's why I love this book. I try and use at least one recipe every night, and at least a dozen on Saturday night. The best part is, I can make these in my dorm without having to show any ID. I just give a list of ingredients to one of my Secret Service dudes, and they do the rest. Is that cool, or what? When I'm at my parent's summer house in Crawford I like to make up a pitcher of Red Zombie Paralyzing Potion and head off to my special Black Light Freakout Room that my dad had built just for me. Talk about a lost weekend!
My sister, Barbara (she's the one whose not as pretty as me), and I are having a race to see who can get to the very last drink first. She's a little ahead of me now, but that's only because I'm more prone to blackouts than her.
Party on, America...!
Shit, I'm not going to try to follow that up with anything.
There is a historical parallel to Dean's candidacy. But it's not McGovern in 1972, as the DLC paranoiacs would like us to believe -- it's Bobby Kennedy in 1968.
Like Kennedy's, Dean's campaign was initially fueled by his antiwar outrage. Like Kennedy, Dean has found himself fighting not just to represent the Democratic Party but to remake it. Like Kennedy, Dean is offering an alternative moral vision for America, not just an alternative political platform.
And like Kennedy, Dean has come under withering attack from his critics for the very attributes that his supporters find most attractive.
"He could be intemperate and impulsive ... the image of wrath -- his forefinger pointing, his fist pounding his palm, his eyes ablaze." Sean Hannity on Howard Dean? No, Theodore White on Bobby Kennedy in "The Making of the President 1968."
I think RFK's death was one of the worst things that ever happened to the USA. I think the world would have been a much better place had he lived. He did try to change the Democratic Party, and the world. I feel Dean is trying to do that to. The Democratic Party has to change, and Dean is the only person running who will change it. Nobody else, and that includes Clark, will do it. Dean can and will. He is electable for the very reasons people are crying that he is unelectable.
As for Miller, he’s barely a member of the human race as far as I’m concerned. That should be a disqualifying factor, but alas, it is not.
But ignore that. Go vote for Zell! Let's give them hell!
On August 30, I wrote of my decision to dive into the public school system of Oklahoma - and it's been quite an experience. This coming Monday, many Oklahoma public school students will be returning to school on the first day of the second semester.
I won't. I won't be returning to the government schooling system. Why? Because I'm a failure. I've fallen short of the bar, and I'm nothing short of a disappointment to society.
I've fallen short by failing to adopt the art of vulgar language in common speech. I'm assuming this falls under the subject of socialization, tolerance and multiculturalism, but I've failed to make the grade in this subject.
For some reason I think he just got tired of getting his ass kicked by everybody from the cool kids to the chess club president.
I guess I'm just anti-social, but I've failed to accept the social experience of getting drunk, the buzz of smoking marijuana or getting high from cold medicine, and I am fruitless in the social event of impregnating teenage girls.
I guess he will never learn that it is about making friends, experiencing a little mischief, elbowing a buddy in silent complicity, and getting crushes on the girl at the front of the class. It is sad he cannot fathom the difference, but subtlety is not a strong point of conservatives. How sad he will go through life on the outside looking in.
I've failed to accept the idolization of sports. For some strange reason, I have looked at sports as an entertaining hobby, but I've failed to fall in line with the norm at my school by refusing to worship the institution of athletics with my time.
He probably is pudgy and uncoordinated, and will never be a star athlete. Most of us won't. But he should learn that exercise is good, and finding a sport to participate in with buddies is a great social outlet as well as good for the body. He doesn't have to worship at the athletic alter to be healthier. However, his body is, or should be, a temple.
I've refused to agree with sex education and other "health day" instructions on the part of education bureaucrats. It must be ridiculous for me to find the entire sex-education idea completely unnecessary.
Okay, for him it might be unnecessary. For normal kids with friends, excitement, crushes, and first kisses it is necessary.
There are so many snarky remarks to be made, but I am struck by how truly pathetic this kid is. I think of all the good times and normal experiences of growing up he is going to miss. This poor boy who preaches "Family Values" is going to grow up missing most of the fun experiences that should be relished when looking back upon childhood.
I have not succeeded in denying the existence of reality, and I have been unable to live in the high-school dream world.
Reality is that these are the same people everybody has to face in the real world. If somebody is unable to get along and make friends in school, how can they ever expect to as an adult. This is not an indictment of all home schoolers, because some of the home schoolers I know are fantastic young adults. They have not been isolated from others in the community and neighborhood, however. It appears that this young man has. Maybe everybody should say a prayer for him. Hopefully he will figure it out someday. Sadly, with the conservative right using him to preach their agenda, that may never happen. Yes it is sad and pathetic.
